Squeaking when car moving.

The Saint.

New member
My car has quite a loud squeak from what seems to be from rear to middle of car somewhere. When in 1st gear and I rock the car back and forth it replicates the noise. Hard to pinpoint where its from, when driving at low speed it is very annoying. Has anyone any idea where it could be coming from[][][]

I feel your pain - I asked a similar question a week or so ago, but unusually no answers from the floor - have we come up with the most obscure squeak of all time?

Looks like it's just us and the mice! 😃

Yes, its so annoying. Sounds like an old pram at low speed. The squeak is quite loud when rocked in gear. But when I jacked drivers side rear up and rocked the wheel there was no noise. Not sure what that means though. My indy thinks it could be something to do with the handbrake? But is too busy to look at it yet. I have been spraying wd 40 over all suspension as well but its still there.[:(]

If it is a creak like old bed springs, then it might be a lower wishbone (coffin arm) ball joint. Trouble with describing squeaks, rattles, creaks, and whines, etc, is that one person's description might not be the same as another's - it is so subjective. The trouble is that there are too many possibilities!

In my case it's not the coffin arms I identified that "creak" earlier in the year, and that was up front! Mines definitely a rattle squeak somewhere middle to rear near side - might be the rear suspension I suppose?

Coffin Arms on rear or Rubber bushes. Spray these with WD40 and see if it goes. WD40m is great for finding the problem but do I joint at a time or you will not know what it is!!!"

Tried wd 40 on all joints, but noise still there. Its going into indy on Monday for investigation. He thinks its handbrake or cable related.

Do update us on the outcome - PLEASSSSSSE! Its driving me mad, I can hear it in my sleep now!

Thanks.

J

Yes I know what you mean. Once you know its there you hear it all the time. Will let you know what my indy finds.
Fingers crossed he does find it.[]

Case solved, the squeak was coming from a loose bolt, n/s on the transverse torsion bar. The n/s bolt was not tight enough. Car now without squeak, happy days.[:)]

Hmmm, well that's a new one on me, and not something I'd have looked for!

I'll get it ramped and checked - glad to hear yours is fixed and thanks for the update!

J

Initially checked every joint and connection on drivers side, that I could get too. So checked drivers side torsion bar bolt. A lift makes it easier, once up in the air, I banged the rear tyre and could hear the noise. Literally took indy 5 minutes to find it. The car had a new clutch and flywheel last year so probably stems from there. Easy fix though, hope yours is too.[:)]
