Squeaky Hood....

Hi Folks
With the hood up and whilst driving , I am getting a annoying intermittent squeak from the hood mechanism. It's coming from the area (right next to my ear) were the mechanism has to make the break from the horizontal and starts it's 45 degree journey down past my shoulder. There is a large joint at this point in the mechanism. Before i get the spanners and the WD-40 out has any one rectified this problem for themselves, are there any does and don't s ?

Cheers Richard.

Richard, are you sure that it is the mechanism rather than the hood seals? Several years ago PC Nottm. advised me to regularly clean all of the rubber seals and joints on the hood with Brake Cleaner and then to lightly lubricate them with a Rubber Care Stick. I do this a couple of times a year and benefit from a squeak and rattle free hood!

Please make sure you don't get brake cleaner on any painted surface!

I just wipe the seals when I wash the car - 8 years in still seems fine to me ...

Thanks for the advice. That's the thing with a intermittent squeak, you can never be totally sure where it's being created. I have a tube of rubber hood lubricant that I brought from BMW called "Gummy Fledge" or words to that effect !
I guess it's now down to a bit trial and error problem solving. Fingers crossed.

if it helps i just had some felt stuck to the rubbing points - cost about 30 quid, no idea where exactly but apparently this is the usual OPC fix - seems a lot of people have the same issue and its where the hood is tight on the frame. will let you know if its squeak free in a couple of weeks!

Why would anyone drive a Boxster with the top up?

Top up or top down, you must be tootling along if you can hear a squeaky top over the sound of a Boxster being driven with responsible gusto.

And if you're stuck in slow moving traffic in the rain, just turn the radio/CD up to drown out any squeaks (that's actually the only time I ever turn mine on).

mine squeaks all the way from about 10-110.....tested in germany of course....and you hear it all the way up - sounds like its made of wood.
