Squeaky new breaks??

I have just pads, discs and sensors changed (rear and front) on my 2002 Boxster S. After a couple of days the breaks developed a very annoying and loud squeaking sound, usually when breaking slowly (at low speeds). If I break harder there is no sound. The breaking itself is fine btw.

I have tried to bed in the brakes by braking hard from speeds of 60mph to 20mph or so a dozen times or so but that didn't have much of an effect (maybe a very slight improvement).

What else can I do? Is this something normal and should I just have to wait for this to disappear gradually as the breaks fade? I have a track day coming up and I want to make sure that the breaks not only produce no sounds but are also at their best (annoyingly seeing their new I would have thought that'd be the case anyway!).
 
Don't use copper slip - use Ceratec paste. Mintex make it, amongst others - available for not very much via eBay, eg: through http://www.ebay.co.uk/usr/azcarpartswakefield

Any grease with metal in can affect the ABS sensors.
 
Coppa slip has been used for 40 years for just this purpose, of course newer products are now available but they dont better what Coppa slip does - just a different choice, It doesnt creep, has a very high melting point and of course you only apply a miniscule amount of it - and when i say miniscule i mean a blob the size of a grain of rice - thats enough to lubricate the rear of the pad (where the piston pushes on the pad) and the same amount again to lubricate the edge of the metal pad that touches the caliper
 
yip i totally agree glyn been working on cars for 20yrs and have always used copa slip and never had a prob.
 
I think it's genuine Porsche pads. Other than that I am not sure what they did, it's an indie Porsche specialist btw (not a dealership) that did this job on my Boxster.

So this won't go away in time as the discs start fading? Should I call them and get them to amend it? It's very annoying to hear (not to mention somewhat embarrassing!).
 

I'd definitely go back to the Indie and get a technician to go for a drive with you so that you can demonstrate the condition. Clearly, something's not right and is unlikely to improve with time.

Ask them exactly what was replaced - genuine Porsche or OEM pads, dics and anti-rattle springs. If they're a reputable company, they'll sort it out for you FOC.

I know that it's difficult to sense where the sound is coming from, but it would be helpful to them if you could indicate if you think that the source of the squeal is the front or rear axle or both axles, or perhaps an individual wheel. It's unlikely, but maybe you have a "rogue" disc or pad set.

Praps problems only ocour when people slap it on like they're dressing a turkey and it goes everywhere!
 
The problems you describe sounds suspiciously like they've not fitted the pad dampers. These are stuck to the backs of the pads and clip into the pistons. A smear of Copaslip or Optimoly should be used on the surfaces of spring clips where they contact with the pistons. On a 986 Boxster S I seem to remember there are different sizes fitted - 28mm at the top and 30mm at the bottom.
 
Yes, I will call them tomorrow. Bit disappointed to be honest as they have a good reputation (though this was the first time I took my car to somebody other than the dealership in the two years I've had it). Obviously I won't name them and shame them but it's taught me a lesson, maybe it's best to use the dealership for things like that in the future. Cheaper isn't better...
 
BTW, this is what a pad anti-vibration damper looks like.... If they fitted them, I would have thought that they would have shown them on the invoice particularly as they cost about £10 each I seem to remember. The part number for the 30mm (top) damper is: 996-352-086-00 and for the 28mm (lower) damper is: 996-352-086-02. You need 4 of each for a front and rear pad change.
