Hi
Anyone out there had this problem? 997 turbo Tip MY08
Belt squeals on start up only from cold .Belt looks ok .Has not been changed since new 21/11/07 so has done 27K miles.
Could it be from water running in through the louvers and dripping off the engine compartment cooling fan onto the belt.
No water got in my 996 4s and its belt didn't squeal when the water pump seized up.
It doesn't do it every time but mostly. there doesn't appear to be any other strange noises like bearings on the way out.
Some pointers would be great
Thanks

Probably loose/worn, I seem to remember they are on the service scheduled to be changed and more often than 2007!!

My GTS does this occasionally after I wash the car but wears off shortly after moving it.With the aerokit, some water does get through. Otherwise my car never exhibits this. Is your car parked outside or garaged?

Does it do it after rain typically orvdoes it do it constantly?

Hi
Thanks for your comment
Its outside Garage full of "stuff". Its mostly after rain and washing .
I noticed that the shroud around the oil filter collects water The oil filter is on the top of the engine on the turbo.
So quite a lot must get through. It also drips straight onto the alternator which cant be good either.
I'm going to change it now anyway and see if it still does it, will get them to check alternator and idler pulleys etc at the same time

Mike, the belt wasn't that expensive, it's shown on the service schedule of less than £100 - and thats Porsche's prices [:)]
I had one that lost two ribs?? only half as wide as it should have been, it was replaced under warranty but I never found out what happened [&:]

Mine had a severe case of Lada Riva at start of this year.

Several trips to OPC, several drive belts and 2 new AC compressors later...problem was finally diagnosed as faulty AC compressor mounting bolt allowing pulley to get out of line with the belt (hence sound of Russia's finest !). Warranty paid for itself with this one [:D]

Belt squeal is not normal, suggest check the belt....then the tensioners....then ancillaries (like alternator, AC compressor, water pump).

Good luck and hope you manage to solve it quicker than we did [&:]

Hi Doug
Thanks for that will get my local man to check it all out when he changes the belt.We thought it could be the alternator as that gets loads of water on it.
Will let you know what we find.
Thanks for the tips
Mike

Hi Folks,
Everything peacefull and normal again .
Belt was the problem well and truly stretched tensioners at the limit. Everything else looked normal.
Had the rads cleaned out and grills fitted and some new rear tyres .
All ready for a play inthe snow over Easter!
Thanks for all the comments
