Squealing noise maybe from rear wheel

My C4S has just developed a load squeal which from driving along with the window down and head out seems to be coming from the rear wheel area. It seems to be when it has been driven a few miles. It is not associated with changing gear and happens if the car is coasting in neutral gear. It is not related to engine speed only road speed. I rang the dealer and they wondered about 'a stone in the disk'. Does this happen? Anyone had it? Any other ideas and does it sound expensive? Under warranty. Its going in on Wednesday 2/8 for them to have a look.

Hi Neil
I had a small stone/grit stick between the pad and disc of our BMW 330, and it made a right racket - sounded like something was actually loose as well as a hight pitched squeal-scrape. It was stuck there for a few days despite my best attempts to dislodge with some wire (pulled garrott-style between the disc/pad).
I just took it up to speed and it just came out .
No lasting damage, which was nice as we p-exed the car a few days later for our Audi.
Hopefully yours will cure itself as well.
Cheers
Rob

OK thanks. I wondered if it was something like that. It did sound very expensive to me but I think it might actually have cleared itself. now. Phew.

I would be careful using the 'Warranty' on investigative work such as this - brakes and 'wear and tear' items are not covered nor is getting stones/dust out of brake calipars/discs ! You don't want to be presented with a bill for a hours labour just to get some dust out the brakes ... []

Suggest either jet washing the front / back (not too close) or compressed air line (if you have one). If that doesn't do it, then try some hard braking (safely of course..) - failing that, then wheels off and pads out to find out what's causing it ...

Best of luck ...

Roads in surrey appear to be having a programme of resurfacing with wet tar and road chippings, (cheap bodge in my book) give it a couple of years and the surface returns to the same state as before. Anyway the result is tons of loose road chippings flying around everywhere. This is the second occasion when I have had a squeeling/grating noise eminating from a rear wheel. Last night removed rear near side and low and behold a trapped stone chipping approx 6 mm in size between the inner metal shroud and the disc, stone removed problem solved.
