squeeky belt

hi,

I have had an intermittent squeek from the general belt direction now for some time, and being honest i thought it was a tensioner bearing or similar - but it comes with wet weather and goes with dry.

As it's been dry the last few weeks, i havent heard the squeek at all, and then today i took the car to the hand wash and there it is again. I'm thinking that when water gets onto one of the belts it starts squeeking and doesnt stop until it has dried off.

its worth mentioning here that the engine under tray is not fitted, which may mean that water is being passed to the belts when the roads are wet.

how can i find out which belt this is? and do you think it may need a tighten or perhaps even changing - or just the engine tray re-fitting?

Thanks in advance. Mark.

If it is that easily heard after a simple wash then it must be a belt that is open to the elements like the alternator or power steering. The cam and balance belts are behind their covers and should be very well protected from dampness so I should try the alternator belt first.

Clarks Garage has a guide to change the entire alternator but it also includes a little bit about tensioning or changing the belt

you could sprinkle some talc on the pulley wheels and belts which should stop the squealing . It could of course be a bearing I suppose.
