SSI?

It is the name of a company that makes stainless steel heat exchangers for the 911.

The exchangers connect to a dual inlet silencer. The factory parts for our cars merge into one. The SSI's do not merge into each other.

I was lead to believe that it stood for Stainless Steel Systems Incorporated, not sure how much truth there is in that.

Thanks - that sounds logical - anyone got any ideas re. reputable/cheap suppliers/fitters?

Andrew - suggest you do a search on here, Pelican Parts and Impactbumpers. You'll find lots of information.

SSI may not be the best solution for a 3.2 - the primaries are really too small for the engine. You'll also lose the heat, though I think 9m do a version that does not.

from what I know and have read and heard the factory standard 3.2 heat exchangers flow well enough, changing the pre-silencer and main silencer helps in the noise and power department.

Andrew,
Watson Autoparts sell them for about the £850 mark for a set, you'll also need a new back box with twin inlets, I've used a Dansk Sport box and it sounds great. In addition, you also need to change one of the oil pipes.
With regards to the heating, we modded the manifods prior to fitment to retain the heating system, I'll try and dig a photo out of how its done. As Chris suggests, 9M do a kit with the mods already done.
SSI's are actually available in two pipe sizes, do a search on Pelican but from what I remember its the larger of the two that you need for a 3.2.

See attached image of the HE's fitted to the car. Having thought about it, if you don't mod te heating system, all you loose is the blown warm air and you can back date to the SC type heating with the air forced from the main cooling fan. You can pick up the required ducts from a breakers for very little, in addition you can then loose the big electric fan from the engine bay and save a few kilo's to boot!

Thanks to all who have provided such comprehensive data. - if anyone has any further thoughts they would be welcomed. Am hoping to go to R7 meeting tonight for the first time and will no doubt pick up further info. there.

If you look at page 94 in January's Porsche Post you can see a picture of the SSI manifolds and Dansk silenced box that was fitted to my 1973 911 2.4 S. Note that they have the old heating system cover over the triple pipes and the silencer is a double inlet box. The black pipe in the near manifold is to supply hot air to the mechanical fuel injection thermostat. The system works very well but is not cheap, it replaced the originals which were over thirty years old and had been patched up often. I do not think the car would be allowed to go on a quiet Track Day but the sound is wonderful.
