SSI's being fitted!!

Well after nearly a year of waiting, for reasons I won't go into, the baby has gone in to have the SSI's fitted....... can't wait to get it back and go for a blast. Next job on the list is a brake overhaul (new flexi lines, new seals and front pads) and clean up the fan and shroud that are starting to look a little crusty.

I'll post some piccies as I go.

I want all the details including how you deal with backdating the heat.

I plan to either buy SSIs from the US or carry them back next time I am out there if a trip is arranged in the near future. Did you source them locally and if so, how much. I would like to compare with US prices. Best I have so far is USD950 plus shipping vs GBP700odd plus VAT.

Wayne Schofield has got nearly 260hp with remapped engine plus SSIs - I can't wait.

Bring it on.

Richard,
I'll get all the details I can from the garage. Having had a word with a chap at Brands who'd had SSI's fitted to his 3.2, it didn't sound too bad, from what I remember it was just a case of modifying the tinware around the engine to get the ducting through.
The parts were shipped from the US last year in a consignment of machine tools!! Our local specialist has direct contact with the manufacturers I understand, he quoted me about 1K fitted inc all the mods to the heating. That was however over a year ago, had a few problems job wise that put things on hold for about 8 months!! I'll keep you posted on that front.....it had better not be too much more, it's taken me over a year to admitt to the wife how much its all going to cost!

Jacob,
I'll do an MPEG when I get the car back, I'll e-mail to those interested.

Just can't wait to get it back.

I know Elephant Racing will ship them UPS 3-5 days for USD95. In the past, Chuck has sent me parts at "used" prices with a cheap invoice for the parts and a second invoice for "engineering services" thereby cutting the VAT and duty right back, so I think I can land them here for around £700. If someone gave me an all in quote of £1,000 fitted with heating sorted, I would jump at that - sounds like a bargain. I still have to have a muffler made. I want one like this.

Mario Lusardi's car is fitted with SSIs + married to an RS outlet. I drove it in Italy a couple of years ago.

It sounds absolutely mental .... below 4000K it's noisy, but above that it really comes into the realms of being adictive. If you browse back through a few (hundred) Porsche Post register reports you can find my write up on the car - 'Living at 6000 rpm'..... the title really reflecting the amazing sound. I likened it to Driving a Ferrari Daytona .... I mean that!

Quote from my article .... "SSI (Stainless Systems Incorporated) under the control of John Daniels, build what is generally known as the best quality heat-exchangers in the world, from the highest quality pure stainless steel and aircraft manufacturing methods. Pure stainless steel is very resonant and therefore noisier than standard."

As with all Carrera mods, one thing alone does not produce much (if any) power increase, but if it's noise you're looking for, the Carrera does that very well.

A nicer, richer sound will do for starters......lets see what we can achieve then!!!

I spoke again to the garage this afternoon regarding the heating, it seems that I will loose the forced hot air provided by the engine bay blower. This system relies purely on the engine cooling fan to force the warm air through, sounds like I'll just have to drive it harder to keep warm.......ho hum [:D][:D]

Once on the move you won't notice any difference as the engine mounted heater/blower motor is inly really effective at idle. You may find with new HEs fitted that you are frying!

Hi Phil

Have you got any further updates on the fitting of your SSI's?

I think one (or both) of my HE's has given up, and it appears a better bet to fit the SSI's instead of replacement HEs, crossover pipe, rear silencer, etc.

Some more details of the heater backdate would be helpful too. BTW who is the specialist doing the work?

Any help would be appreciated.

Cheers

Anil

Phil I've done the heating backdate, the blanking plates I fitted I bought from a breakers or as you say they can be easily made by bending some tin in a vice, you will be able to sell the blower motor as they are always breaking down. I paid about a tenner for the tin which was tatty but the bits I wanted were ok after blasting and powder coating.

At long last, it might be ready today, but I'm not holding my breath!! I think 7 weeks for an exhaust change has to be an all time record!

Spoke too soon, still not ready.....arrrrrgh I really think they're taking the p155 now!
One of the reasons its taken so long is that they've also had to sort a gearbox oil leak, under warranty, for when they re-built the damn thing 2 years ago!
Oh well, whats another few days on top of 7 weeks!
