Can anybody suggest where I might get a stainless steel system for a 944 cab. don't want anything fancy, just a straight-forward swap --- no extra noise.

You really only have two options -

1. Dansk do a stainless rear box that numerous retailers sell for around £170. I have had one for over 10 years and 80,000 miles and its still solid, shiny and looks new when polished. A few recent purchasers have had problems with quality but if you contact jmgarage.co.uk they will supply a good quality Dansk and stand by their products. There is no 'off the shelf' front pipe, but any exhaust welder can weld in a straight peice of pipe to the exhaust manifold for around £100 depending where you live

2. A custom made system from the manifold back will set you back circa £500 depending where you live. Try places like http://www.haywardandscott.com/ http://www.longlife.co.uk/ and http://www.mijexhaust.com/

Hayward one of the best not the cheapest by far. However the best always cost more good rep as well.

My one booked in for a full system, next month not cheap. However fit it and go plus 25 guarantee on the system for peace of mind.

I did a lot of research, before making my choice as its a lot of money.

Thanks for all the replies. I bought my first 944 (a 2.7) in 99. It was a bit noisy and it seemed the rear box was on-standard ss as it was round not oval. After 6 months I changed the whole system for what I was told was a second-hand factory ss system. this was fitted and when I passed the car on in 2012 the whole lot was as solid as could be. When I sold it, the car had covered 300k miles of which 170k was on this ss system. Such work on the car I don't do myself is done at Woodward Motors just north of Bristol and one of the firms suggested is only a couple of miles from WM, so very convenient I think!

The Dansk system is a bit of a no brainer. Got one on my race car as its about 1/2 the weight of the OEM exhaust, saved something like 6 or 7 Kg. My noise tests went up by about 3 or 4 dB though which in itself is not a problem as the S2 is very quiet anyway but she doesn't qualify for those rare 89 dB days at Thruxton any more.
