Stainless exhaust

Picked up a stainless steel exhaust for my S2, and although it's in good condition, it looks as though the car it came off was running rich. There was plenty of black sooty deposits in both openings, which I have cleaned out as far into the pipes as I can get.

Question: assuming a stainless exhaust last a lot longer than a mild steel one, is there anything inside the system that can clog up in a situation like this - baffles, sound deadening material, etc. Is there any way of cleaning it out (other than a good blast down the raod which I will be doing anyway!)?

As far as I can make out it's a standard system - quiet. I thought the one I took off was mild steel as main pipe & front box was quite rusted, and the polished tail pipe cover was missing exposing a broken and rusted tail pipe. The one I've put on is a Bischoff.

I see you have an S2, so not sure how applicable the following comments will be.

I have an 88 951S, but not much winter driving and only 44,000 miles. No rust on the exhaust, and I know for sure as I had to take it off for a clutch job.

I did replace the exhaust tip as the outer cover had rusted out. But when the exhaust guy was trying to cut the old one off on the main exhaust pipe with an industrial sawsall with a brand new blade, he wore the teeth of the blade out. He was rather pissed but said he recalled reading that our exhausts were made out of a pretty exotic material. So he went through another blade to cut through. At least on my car, that tubing is something pretty sturdy.

Check the seams on the front/mid box. If you've been running rich chances are you've been back firing and the seams of the front/mid box may have suffered. If this is the case you may find your not running to well at low revs as air can be sucked back in.

My car is not running rich, it's the used exhaust that I bought that looks as though it's come off a car that's been running rich. I closely inspected the system before I bought it and it's in excellent condtion. I gave the car a good blast last night and all is well. It also seems quiter than the old system I took off. I'll probably just leave it as it is.

Hey Les,

Sounds like your S2 may have had a cheaper replacement exhaust fitted at some stage. Backing up the comments above I also thought the genuine porsche exhausts were stainless, mine is original as far as I can tell and is not rusty but very discoloured.
