Stainless steel fixings

[FONT=verdana,geneva"]My baby has had a bit of a trauma; lost a cambelt tensioner on the A2 at 4000rpm[:(]. Having recovered her to the front lawn, I have stripped her of both manifolds, airbox, cam covers, throttle, etc. The valves I can see all appear to be okay but time will tell. The biggest problem has been the number of original (read corroded) fixings that have been reluctant to leave the engine bay. Given that I plan to restore the old girl to her former glory, does anyone know a reliable source for stainless fixings for the engine and ancillaries? Any info much appreciated.

Sorry to hear about your mishap. I hope its not too bad. Good luck.

However................be careful when buying st/steel fixings especially if you are using them as structural fixings ie:torque critical. There are many grades of stainless steel and its characteristics are different to steel particularly in that it is far more likely to work harden and become brittle.

I recommend you use ordinary specified fixings and especially in ally to prevent electrolytic action/corrosion use copperslip and or Loctite (I use 242 with no issues at all)

Note also that if you need to retorque into ally you MUST clean the threads perfectly or it will misread and overtorque (read stripped threads)

get a selection of metric zinc plated fixings off of ebay. I wouldn't bother with stainless on the engine
