Had a good quote from Norwich Union, but they say the standard alarm system is not thatcham cat 1 approved and they would need a new alarm system installed to cover it. I thought all modern cars' alarm systems were thatcham approved - any one know what the situation re a 996 C2, 2000 model would be ?

Insurance companies are funny things.

I am with Direct Line, my car ('03 C2) for insurance purposes is valued at £38k and fully comp covered... without the need for a Tracker being fitted. A collegue has an '04 C4S valued at £45k and needs a Tracker fitted. Same level of cover and again with Direct Line.

Not sure what type of system is fitted as standard, but I just said "factory fitted alarm" and it was fine.

... tell me about it. My current insurer (but not for much longer) jumped when I said mine had a tracker fitted and said - "oh, so its been modified - that might push the premium up" !!

Hi, I had the same questions so called the OPC. I have a 2003 model Carrera 4.

This was their response and it was accepted by the Insurance Company: UK spec cars have the alarm/imobiliser integrated into the car system. It is Thatcham Cat 1. The reference number to quote saying it is Cat 1 is: TCZ900/1197.

Note that the older 996 may have the PA2000/1000 type systems and these may not be classed as Cat 1.

Regards, Jason

All 996's have the same type of alarm control unit. The PA1000/2000 was used on the 993.

There was a change in 01, but it was only to introduce the remote lid unlocking. All UK 996's are fitted with additional security (tilt sensor and alarm siren).

Hmm- just did a search on Thatcham's web site. Seems the standard alarm is Cat 2 and not 1. It must have interior movement sensors and a few other features to get category 1 status ... still, 492 seems a good price, so may be worth upgrading the alarm for that.
