Standard exhaust db?

Hi 997-ers,

My uncle has a Gen1 997 Carrera S, tip cab and is thinking of joining me on a "quiet" track day.

The track day organisers have said they do the static test slightly differently for rear-engined cars due to engine noise but I wondered if anyone knew the db output of the standard (non-PSE) exhaust for this car?

Many Thanks, David

Tricky one this. My experience was that my previous 2S recorded different db levels every time I attended a track day. General results were:
Castle Combe - 99-101db
Goodwood - 101-105db (the higher value being a very blustery day with a lot of background noise)

Yes, static test levels. My car wouldn't get close to the quiet 95db days. Never had any problems with the drive by microphones once on track though. It's worth going along to your local track and get the car measured, all cars and tracks are not the same.

Mine (with PSE ) was 97 at Castle Coombe and 102 at Goodwood and Goodwood explained in a rich Sussex accent that they had a digital decibel measurement device whereas ho ho down in the country ( Castle Coombe ) they had an analogue device. At Castle Combe they tested mine in a covered area which must increase the noise somewhat.

It all seems to be a bit of a lottery to me but Geoff's advice is spot on.

Just to add to this post, I had my 997.1 C2S sound tested at Castle Coombe at the classic retro June this year by the scrutineers when they had a quiet moment! One side was 95 dB and the other 94 dB - static test, still day and very warm, engine running at 4,000 or 4,500 can't quite remember which. Out of interest all the exhaust clamps had just been replaced so it is probably as quiet as I could expect it to be or it will ever be.
