Standing for 4 Months

Hi
I bought an 87 2.5 na 944 at the end of last year. I had the belts changed and got it serviced straight away, but due to work comitments I ended up leaving the country for 4 months at short notice. It has sat in a dry garage without being started since then. It had about 1/4 tank of fuel in it.

Should I do anything special prior to starting it up? I expect the battery to be flat, but does anything else need checking? The oil and coolant were changed as part of the service.

Everything worked when I put it away (even the clock!) so I am hoping it will still be okay. At least it didnt get driven in the snow I suppose.

Thanks

I wouldn't have thought you'd have any problems after 4 months but if you're particularly worried you could spin the engine up with the plugs out to eject any rubbish without compression causing any problems if there is a blockage. It would be worth giving the timing belt a quick visual check first but shouldn't be any problems. After I sorted out my dead fuel pump on my 83 944 it started up with a bit of reluctance after being sat in a garage for around 8 years so you should be alright ;)

I would suugest a liberal dose of oil on the camshaft and rockers but as this is very difficult to do I would follow the previous posters advice and give the engine a good few spins without starting. This should get some oil at least up to the rockers and minimise any start up wear. You should be able to spin it till the oil pressure light goes out.

I dismantled a head from an S2 recently that had stood for 2 years!, awaiting work..... I was very surprised at how well lubricated everything still was to be honest, far far better than i expected, I really wouldn't be too stressed at all if youve only been gone 4 months, cars can sit on OPC forecourts for that length of time... I very much doubt they get any special attention!

Over the years, my 968 has regularly sat unused (but with a battery conditioner connected) for anything from 2 to 10 weeks, and fires up without problems. I've never done anything other than turn the ignition key! Saying that, I'm tempting fate as I'm about to start her for the first time since December 14th. What's the betting Murphy's Law is about to kick in!!

I left my turbo for 3 months without starting it. Just started it up and it was fine. Slightly concerned about the discs as they look a bit rusty, will just take it for a good run.

Disconnect battery conditioner, car started first time - only turned over about twice before firing up. Took her for a little spin to warm things up, all seems OK. Longer run now, 45 mins up M20 to Brands for R25 monthly meet.

I'll be interested to hear how you get on, shouldn't think for a moment that you'll have a problem, but I'm considering a SORN for mine next winter as over the last winter I effectively took Ruby off the road for a lot of the time.
