Starter Motor 1989 G50

Hi, Does anyone know how easy it is to get to the starter motor to give it a tap as it seems the solenoid is stuck - can I get at it under the car or from the engine bay?

The motor can be accessed from underneath on offside. But before that, if you can hear clicking from starter when activated I should check the battery state first. Drained or low battery charge state is the most common cause of starting woes.
 
2nd that - its usually the battery thats the prob.... unless you are unlucky.
Starter motor easier to access from a pit or with the car on ramps - but try and juice the battery first.

Hi Guys, thanks for that , so access from the drivers side, sounded like click was from the other side?

I thought battery but I have tried a few charged batteries in here and checked the voltage etc and they were all good.

Will try a few taps I guess.
 
Also check the earth strap to body this corrodes as it goes over the rear beam. Earths to body, mine played up on way back from Le Mans last year. Replaced and has been OK so far. To get motor out you have to drop gearbox slightly to get at the top mounting nut

Check all the electric stuff first. Changing it is pretty easy, car up on the axle stand then lower the back end of the engine down a few inches on a trolley jack so you can access the top bolt, you can lower the gearbox end down too as Geoff suggests, but I wanted access to the rear of my engine as well to tidy up some pipework.. I have a used spare I bought as I my original decided to engage whilst cruising on the M1. I bought the spare one expecting the original on to be toast, surprising it was fine after 80mph of excitment and is still starting the car fine over a year on. If you need it you can have it for £50 +p/p

On a different note:
Just incase you have a squeeling, on its last legs engine bay heater motor get it fixed asap. I didn't and it toasted itself on the M1, taking some of the harness with it, that harness also has the solenoid feed in it. It then shorted and engage the starter motor, strangely I didn't notice until I exited the M1, i just thought somebody up front was driving with their handbrake on. Ultimately it was a lucky escape that very nearly started a fire. Damage was virtually nill but could have been a whole lot worse.

I gave the solenoid one tap and she started first touch. Hope it doesn't happen again now.
