oh yes - once every 15-20 years.

Very reliable as you would expect, earth straps and dme relay are slightly worse.

Hopefully you will be back on the road quickly - assume it is the starter and not one of the other things mentioned. Would suggest getting one that is not repaired/remanufactured - the cost saving is minimal and a new one gives some comfort of mind.

Failures are certainly heard of. My records shows that mine is on its second and this one is also on its way out because occassionally I just get a click. But it usually turns over on the 2nd or 3rd go. 80K+ miles on each starter is not bad going though.

I've taken off the leads and cleaned them up in case it was just bad connections due to corrosion but that hasn't made any difference.

Thanks for the replies.
New one ordered, arriving tommorow morning, should be up and running tommorow pm,Porsche center Leicester are great...![:)]
Was just suprised it died so sudden without any warning!

Nope they are fitting it,guy doing the job drives to work in a 964,He knows his way around one so hopefully won't take that long[:D]

Just picked it up,maybe there was a signal that the old motor was on its way out just didn't realise it,the old motor in comparison to the new one was 4 times slower in turning...the new one sounds much quicker first time i turned it made me jump slightly..!,happy days[:)]

Sounds good [:)]. How much to get it all done?

Steve,£427.69 plus VAT, really quick turn around, brand new parts (2yr warranty),valeted and they are next door to my work , unexpected bill but i am happy enough with that[:)]

Not bad at all Mark. Having read a few threads on Rennlist about DIY starter replacement, it appears to be a real b*tch of a job. Especially when only having jacks and stands to support the car while working underneath. So well worth the extra paying someone do it.
