Starter motor issues

Hi all, I have had my 2002 C4 since last April and aothough I love the drive, I just keep getting costly issues.

Recently I noticed that my starter motor was making a skreechy noice shen starting. On the weekend it struggled to to crank so I took it for a long drive thinkng it needed a charge. I parked up and then tried to start it about 10 mins later. No start.

Called the AA and he tells me that it sounds like the startor is sticking and the battery is good and charging.

Am looking at chnaging the starter myself. Does anyone have any instructions with pics? where is is located, left or right site of the engine? Can I get to it form below wiithout dismantling the top of the engine?

All help appreciated Thanks.

This might help: http://www.renntech.org/forums/tutorials/article/182-removing-and-replacing-the-starter/

It is usually the Bendix on the starter motor that dries out and sticks, giving a squealing noise as it disengages.

Thanks for the link Richard, but I cant seen to get my membership sorted on the site to give me access.

The starter seems to have stopped sqeeling but it turns over very slowly and does seem to struggle. I thought i'd try and take it out and give a greese up.

I read in the user manual that after the first start the starter stops automatically if its successfull. If not on subsequent attempts it does not stop automatcally thus you can get the squeel before the solenoid retracts.

I replaced my battery recently as my old one was not holding charge. I have not heard any squeels since.
