Starter motor problems

Hi guys, used the car a few times today after a 2 week gap, stop start 3 or 4 times no problem.
20 minutes on the motorway and turned off for 10 minutes, starter motor solenoid is clicking but it appears that the starter is not engaging and turning, new battery about 2 months ago. Tried to jump start but the same.
Sounds to me like the starter needs to come off for inspection but before I do is there anything Porsche specific that I am missing ? Is the starter motor removal the same as anything else ?
The car is an auto so can I tow start to get home like a Mercedes or is that a no no ?

Thanks

I had a problem with the starter on mine not long after I bought it. Pretty straight forward to remove it.
I had mine rebuilt by a local auto electrician who cleaned it all out, replaced the brushes and the solenoid for about £40. Been fine ever since.

To those that like to follow these threads ......

I took off the starter this afternoon, easy enough access from the near side underneath.
Starter dog or solenoid is kicking in but can't get the actual motor to spin over, took appart and cleaned and checked everything but still no good so it's either a refurb or a new one, just about to take a look on eBay. Unless anyone has a spare they want shot of ?
Looks like the same as a 944 or at least the part number is 944 ......

I think that you will find that the starter for the manual 968 only fits the 968. Many parts carry a 944 part number even though unique to the '68.

Extensive ebaying tonight looks like the manual and auto are indeed 2 totally different items.
Mine being an auto has a 944 part number and looks like those advertised for the 944.
Now the next step is do I go for a reconditioned one at around £200+ or one from a breakers at about £50 and take a chance ?
