Starter Motor S2

It looks as if our starter motor has now finally given up the ghost.

It's always been lazy and slow, but post yesterdays race it didn't want to rotate at all.

We know it is getting power, the cables on the battery jump when the key is turned, but the motor she no go.

So need to buy a hi-torq new starter motor, anyone have any good suggestions?

Somewhere, I have a link for a firm who will create a geared high torque starter motor for any application. Ive seen them for old <=G-Series 911s and even Dolomite Sprints(!) but nothing ready-made for a 944 yet.

Gerry,

Great to see you yesterday, it was a good day out and many thanks for your hospitality. Shame about the non-start, but it's good that it failed immediately after the race rather than during the stop in the middle of it.

I was with Tom in suspecting the starter motor. When you say "Hi Torq", do you simply mean a 'good quality' one or is this something specific? If you were looking for a standard one then I'd suggesting getting the existing one re-built as replacements are not cheap, and you could probably get this done before you go to Spa. Failing that, and given that it seems it's not a common part with anything else, I'd guess you are into looking at the usual suppliers (GSF/ECP/Frazerpart etc etc etc).

I hope you get on OK with it.

Oli.

I know this isn't directly answering your question, but when I replaced my starter motor lAst year the shop used the big standard replacement part. Car went from starting like a tractor to bursting into life in a couple of seconds. A mSsive improvement.

Thanks Oli, I must say you were a class act yesterday, excellent pit stop!

Without your help in mechanicals between qualifying and race i don't think we would have made it, thank You.

I'm worried about turn-around, so I might even go the PD way.

Tom is getting the exhaust welding done next week.

Have a look on line for your local starter alternator rebuilder normally costs about £100-120 to have one fully refurbished and normally 2-3 days turnaround

Had a similar problem myself recently. I bought the car a couple of years ago and noticed that the engine turned over quite slowly when the starter engaged. Sometimes, I wasn't sure the engine was going to turnover. I assumed it might be the battery as the starter was replaced with a new one just before I bought it. It turns out that the previous owner bought a non OE item. I found an OE Bosch starter on Ebay for £185.00 and the engine now turns over a treat. I've just checked Ebay, and you can still buy one at that price. Retailer is Euro Car Parts.

Hope that helps!

Just get it rebuilt by your local Bosch man Gerry... Shouldn't cost too much and I can't see it taking long to turn round

Hey Gerry,

Are you all sorted for a starter?

If not I'd recommend a hi torque WOSP racing starter, I run their starter and alternator and they are great (although full disclosure I'm good friends with the owner) but still they produce some highly rated kit for a lot of race cars from our 944s to the latest MacLarens, Indy Lights, Aston 177 etc.

They are made to order but can typically turn one around within a few days. You should be able to obtain through one of the main dealers like Demon Tweaks but if you have any issues send me a PM and I'll see what I can do.
