It seems the throw out bearing on my starter motor is hitting the bolts that hold on the starter teeth. Any thoughts on why it might have started doing this. The cause must be that the teeth have moved relative to the starter motor. Should there be any kind of shim when you install the starter motor?

Just measured the ring gear with a bolt in and it does stick out 2mm maximum. perhaps yours have worked loose or other cars have a thinner ring gear/ shallower countersink, I think you should be able to check yours through the starter hole one at a time by turning the engine over with a socket on the end of the crank.
There is no countersink here, the bolts are bolted up against the surface of the starter teeth and stick out the full height of the bolt head about 5mm. Can anyone with a turbo confirm if this is as it should be? There is about 1mm of play in the thrust bearings but if the bolts were countersunk there wouldn't be an issue.

The starter ring gears I have seen have all had counter sunk bolts, although they have been early and late 944's and a 968 not the 944 turbo, somebody on here must have done a clutch on a turbo failing that maybe the PET will show or workshop manual. It does sound like its fitted the wrong way round.
Well measured the play in the thrust bearings, roughly, seems like its top end of spec. Anyway the issue is now resolved due to the insertion of a washer between the starter motor cog and the end stop. After re-greasing the starter mechanism its spinning over nicely. Lives to fight another day. Yeaah!
