Starter Not.................Starting?

Hi Folks, we were out at Silverstone yesterday, Tom put in a 1m 10s lap to put us mid-field. I as usual was a couple of seconds more cautious.

All went well until pit-stop driver change when the b***dy thing would not re-start, we bumped it and got a 17th finish. The pit-stop lap was a horrendous 2m 39s.

The problem is strange the starter motor is not even turning, the ignition key lights everything up, and there's a faint whirring sound (normal) you turn the key the extra bit, as to start, the whirring stops and nothing............ It not a jammed started motor as the lights don't dim or anything indication heavy current pull or bad earthing. just nothing.................. the key springs back and the whirring recommences.

Been underneath it this morning and cannot see anything untoward under the car , solenoid and starter motor look fine. We've wrapped the exhaust so it doesn't get over heated, it looks A1 underneath.

I took the FIA cut-out switch off and inspected the rear, that looks fine.

Any ideas where to go next?

Gerry

This might be a red-herring, but have you cleaned-up the starter motor and solenoid connections? - mine was similarly (and intermittently) refusing to start until I did so (started motor not turning, no solenoid 'click', no current drain), now starts every time.

Good luck

Mick

It's a 5 minute job to take the starter motor off so I would whip it out and bench test it with some jump leads off a battery.

Thnx M3 just done that and guess what? It's b**gered.

We checked up as we had replaced the whole unit last year in June, so Tom spoke to EuroCarParts (yes they were working) and its a replace under warranty [:)] so I'll ship it down to Tom, and he'll bring the new one to Spa.

Good - that'll give us something to do when we arrive! [:)]

Seems a bit unfortunate that the new starter has failed so early. In terms of number of starts, it's hardly been used. Any idea who it was made by?

Oli.
