Starter problem

Hi Guys

I have an intermittent starting problem, randomly when I attempt to start the car I get a loud click and... nothing. The starter usually cuts in after about 4 goes. I think the problem's worse when the car's cold, but it's pretty random. I have a new Bosch battery which is kept on a maintenance charger and my starter motor was replaced (admittedly with a recon unit) about 10,000 miles ago. Any ideas gratefully received! Thanks for any help.

I would check/clean the battery connections first especially as you say it has just been replaced. Then check starter connections are tight and earth connections between engine and body as this tends to deteriorate/rust over time. This problem can also occur with worn flywheel ring gear which can sometimes be checked by rocking the car forward slightly in gear to re-position said flywheel then try starting again. That only occurs with very high mileage on "normal" cars I dont know if its ever occurred with a Porsche! After all that it's probably a dicky starter or starter solenoid!

Thanks for the advice, will try these steps. Forgive the ignorance, but where do I find the engine earth strap?!

James

I've done a few starters over the years......different cars.
There's an earth strap from the gearbox mounting....check all connections around the battery.
It's also worth checking all the wires around the starter.
You will have to remove the undertray and possibly one of the paper/wire tubes from the heat-exnchangers.
But faulty starters are common on 964s at this age.
To change the starter, you can undo the gearbox mounting and lower the box/engine about 2 inches.
Then you can get to the starter.
Easier on a C2 than a C4.

For anyone that likes crawling under their 964 I recomend looking at this: http://www.ezcarlift.com/
