Starter sounds sluggish

I have a 1990 S2 and since I have had the car the starter always sounds sluggish. I have tried a new battery but it still sounds the same any ideas?

Cheers Dave

TADS though to a good extent. Comes from being the largest displacement 4 cylinder production engine ever made.

Thanks for that. The car always starts first time normally within one or two turns of the engine.

I'm sure I read on here once that the crank sensor has to pass the pickup a set number of times before the engine will fire so they always crank over 2 or 3 turns before they go no matter what.

A new battery and recon starter on my cab got it not too bad. Maybe an earth lead would have helped still further but you will nevver get it to whiz over.

I had a similar problem, but mine also sounded awful as the starter dog was slow returning. Removed the starter motor and discovered the mechanicals were as dry as a bone. Stripped it down, cleaned it up, applied a little grease to the bearing surfaces and it's spot on now! The S2 is however a little sluggish as each pot is 750cc!

3 turns !!!! Mines always been 5 turns and a 1 second or so purse between turn 1 and 2. I'm getting those earth straps replaced

I have the same car doing the same thing for 3 years. Don't be imagining problems, real ones will soon let you know! I have a mate who comes out of his house just to hear it start!

It's called 'character' [:D]

I'm sure a new battery, starter and earth straps will improve it but mine has had the 'S2 starter shuffle' for the past 7 years. All S2's have slow starters (some slower than others). My personal advice is to replace it when it finally fails altogether.
