Starting difficulties

My 2.7 used to start on the button. Now it will only start after a good wind and with one's foot flat on the floor. This is definately not normal Porsche behaviour and is a trifle embarrasing when the local village lads are waiting for you to take off like a dose of salts. Anyone got any ideas that can be brought into play while no one is watching?

Thankyou in advance.

Ah - yes - this seems familiar! [] My2.7RS would need serious cranking over before she'd fire (twenty seconds or so!) - I assumed it was an MFI thing - running down to Le Mans with another 2.7RS owner I was peeved that his went first turn of the key [&:] Strangely my problem was always from cold - hot starting was no bother at all.

But she's just come back from Autofarm having had the MFI set up properly and the coil replaced - and she starts straight away [:)] so my advice is make sure the MFI is set up right - looks like a winter job will be to have the MFI pump rebuilt as everyone who's looked at her is convinced the pops and bangs on the overrun are the MFI pump [:(] Hey, ho - the joy of old Porkas [;)]

Roll on the warmer driving weather......

Do post some pics of your 2.7 [:)]

Hope it is nt a Bosch coil from Brazil i ve had 3 faulty/total failures in 7 months ...............now carrying spare!

Have you checked for a fuel leak. The fuel pump maintains the system under pressure if there is a leak in the fuel supply system it takes a while for the pressure to build up again before it will start. I had this problem and I found two leaks on the back of the MFI tightened it all up and it started instantly again.

Have you checked the points? Sounds like they could be closed up. It's a two minute job to look at and a three minute job to fix.[8|]

Vic & Nigel. The MFI would seem to be functioning properly. If the throttle needs flooring in order for the engine to fire would not that indicate more air is needed?? Or have I just shown a complete misunderstanding of how the system operates??

Alex. Thanks for the lead. Checked the points and they are set correctly.

If the problem occurs only when the engine is cold then it is probably related to the cold start mechanism. This could either be the temperature switch on top of the crankcase to the right of the MFI pump or the solenoid on top of the fuel filter. To check the system disconnect the cold start fuel pipe from the left manifold and point it into a container. Crank the motor and fuel should come out.

Hi Helen,
I too had starting problems from cold. Please go to the technical section of the early 911 forum to read my reply to anotehr question.
It is titled Mechanilca fuel injectors.

Sorry , coil comment directed at Phil, it seems coils either work or they dont , funnily, new out the box i expected mine to go longer than 6 weeks !.............when mine have failed usually in the fast lane and THERES SUDDENLY NOTTHING........i had similar probs to urs for a while after the total refurb of my S, went throught the lot finally inc slow running relay, finally discovering circlips in cold start valve breaking up ...........clue finally started chucking in huge amounts of fuel as got worse , then limited power and loads of smoke /has to go somewhere............rebuilt with patience and new clips !

I think I *was* suffering from a coil problem - NOT related to cold starting but detonation in the back box - a new CDi went down just before the run to Classic Le Mans and I quickly sub'd with one from another car - it appears the CDi can be destroyed not only by bad earthing but also poor coil performance - new one fitted and she's behaving much better - fingers crossed!

Much to my surprise that little box ,hesitate to say this, is the only thing that did nt get binned ............if theres an irony to this tale the coil i threw away , based on small money lets just get a new one , was probably OK !
