Starting issue

Had my N/A 944 nearly a year, always started first time.

Went out last night, ran like a dream, put her away in the garage after.

Tried to start this morning, turned over but would not fire.

Checked all the leads, pulled off and on. Fuel pump heard priming - still would not fire.

Checked spark from the coil, no problem

Turned her over to check No 1 lead and she fired up. Plug lead was off and yes I got a belt.

Went for a spin, no issues.

Any ideas ? Was it a freak or signs of coil, leads breaking down or electrical short somewhere ?

My 944 stopped suddenly, and after a bit of head scratching I figured out that the coil lead was arcing out onto the dizzy cap retaining screw. It had burned through the insulation completely. Maybe checking this stopped the short but the car wouldn't start without it connected anyway so you would have not realised that you had inadvertantly cured it. Have a close look at the coil lead for signs of burning. I hate it when a problem fixes itself, as you never know if it's going to happen again.[]
