starting problem when warm!

Me too. Spoke to mike at Zentrum he knows of the problem and mine is going in in March for the fix.
He told me it would not let me down but it is a bit embarrassing in traffic if stalled!
 
I have the same proven, my OPC tells me it occurs when the car isn't used often enough or as with mine used every day but mainly less than twenty miles a time, doesn't allow the battery to be recharged sufficiently, the answer, a trickle charge.
 
You need to be clearer about what's happening. Does it turn over as normal when hot but takes a lot of turns to start or does the starter turn over slowly - or not at all?!
 
You can spend a great deal of time and not a little money trying to second-guess an engine fault and there will be as many various solutions as the people you ask for advice.
For my two penneth, I suggest you take it to your nearest PC or find an experienced indie with a PWSIS decoder and get an engine analysis done. Chances are it's a coil pack, sensor fault or similar.

Since you can cold start OK it sounds as though your battery and starter motor are working well enough, so it's probably something like a faulty crank position sensor.

As Clive says, the most effiicent way to go is to get the car on a Porsche-specific diagnostic system which should quickly identify the source of your problem.

Ok, this is going to be a long ramble but bear with me, a happy ending!

I had this for about a year and a half on my 2005 2S. Started relatively easily when cold but struggled when hot. Sounded like the starter was 'lazy' when the engine was hot. If I stalled, it would not start immediately, too much strain, count to ten and it would reluctantly turn over and catch. Stop for petrol and sit for 3 or 4 minutes and it would start OK'ish. Porsche dealer checked the battery and said it was OK. I Googled this endlessly and thought it was the issue with the cable running from starter to battery which seemed to be inadequate to take the load when hot - if I remember it was an issue with the connectors - or so some people say. Asked Porsche Swindon if this could be it and service said they could not remember seeing any. This is an expensive job as OPCs take the engine out to do the job - some specialists have smaller hands and may do it without so I heard!

Having new brakes fitted at a specialist (highly respected) he mentioned the starting issue and said they would refurbish the starter motor for me for £150 or thereabouts - I thought fair enough and booked it in for the Monday after the Fairford Air Tattoo July 2015. Put the car on trickle charge the night before and in the morning the battery was completely dead. I bought a new Bosch battery at 8:30 on Saturday morning at Europarts the AA man came out within half and hour and fitted it and the car has been absolutely brilliant since. Starts on the nose hot or cold, briskly - I can't tell you what a relief it is. I bought one of these these batteries (highly recommended on odd forums) if I remember right - found the bookmarked link with all the others talking about starting problems!

Oh yes and I turned up at Fairford late and got treated like royalty - personal escort to the Porsche parking area!

I have had a bit of a rant because everyone thinks Porsche problems are so much more complicated than a normal car - in some cases I guess they are. But in this case it was a battery which was probably 10 years old as it had the Porsche branding on it - it just happened to take 18 months to die! If my 56 reg Golf had been exhibiting these kinds of problems I would have just switched the battery without even thinking about it and not spending endless hours surfing! To me your car is a year younger than mine, probably on its original battery which is taking its time to meet its maker - just like mine.

Whilst I am on it, I have had similar with the air con. OPC have said for two and a half years it 'could be leaking' as there is a stain on the condenser - would I like to give them £1400 to fix it? Again if it was the Golf I would wait until it died and then do something about it; it was working perfectly by the way. I had the specialist out, who used to do the difficult jobs for my OPC, to both the 997 and the Golf - discount price for two cars, emptied the systems, pressure tested and refilled both, declared them fit and healthy and guaranteed the job for however long. He will fit condensers to the 997 for around £700 by the way.

You've got my point - it is likely to be the simple problem first and I am sorry to have used your thread to have a rant. I hope it is a battery problem and nothing more serious.

It's taken me two years to realise it's just a car - albeit a pretty special one which I love to death.
