Starting problem

Hi,

After work the other day i got into my S2 and it didnt turn over, there was just a clicking noise from the starter solenoid but the engine wouldnt turn. I then tried to jump it using another car and there was no difference, again just a clicking noise from the starter. I then tried to bump start the car, but when i engaged the clutch the back wheels just locked, i am presuming this is the LSD as mine is fitted with one.

Do you think this is a starter motor problem???

Any advice is much appreaciated.

Thanks, Mark.

it sounds like the starter is the problem but I would check the earth straps to the block and the terminals on the starter solenoid. It might pay to remove the leads to the starter and clean them up and refit. Sometimes they can oxidise during the winter particularly with all the salt on the roads lately.

i tried turning the engine today at the crank pulley, it gets so far and then stops and i cant turn it any more! What could this be? It's out of gear which should discount the gearbox. I think there was probably nothing wrong with the starter motor, and just that the starter couldnt turn it bast the blockage. Maybe a dropped valve?

Marky,

Are you doing that with the spark plugs in or out? With them in the standard compression is likely to stop you doing it manually.

I'd go with other posters and guess either starter motor or engine earth strap.

doing it with plugs in. Will take out and try. Spoke to an independant porsche garage today, he thinks the cam belt has snapped!

tried it with plugs in, no different. Perhaps its dropped a valve, or maybe the belt has snapped. I'll get the plastic cover off and take a look when the hurricane outside stops. Can anyone think of anything else that would stop the engine turning?

yes if the teeth from the stater had broken and got jammed in the flywheel possibly (clutching at straws) but I should have thought that rather unlikely.Possibility that the starter motor itself is seized

Check to see if you can turn the engine in the opposit direction. If you can its unliky to be anything jammed in the pots but more likely something jammed in the flywheel or possibly something in the sump jammed in your crankshaft.
Did you overheat ? or lose all your oil ? unlikely the engine is seized.

No I'm going back to the starter motor. Take it off the car and then see if you can turn the engine over.If you can then it eliminates anything jammed and you can concentrate on refurbing your starter.

thanks for the reply. Starter is off the car, plugs are out. Engine turns so far (by hand) one way then stops, then so far the other way then stops. I will take the plastic cover off the belts to see if anything is obvious.

removed the belt cover, both belts in good condition and not snapped. Also looked into spark plug hole with torch, and i can see the top of the pistons so it's unlikely theres a dropped valve. This thing is getting wierder all the time.

it is beginning to sound like a bent valve to me. If the starter is off and it is not completly seized but still doesn't turn more than 1/3rd each way I'd say a bent valve stem or dropped valve head embedded in the piston.
with an S2 the valve hole is recessed really deep so I'm wondering if it is possible to get a better view into the chamber via the injector holes ? not sure of the head layout as I have never worked on one.
Its quite a bit of work to remove the inlet manifold so lots of other things to check before going there.
I take it you have checked the gearbox is not faulty ? I had a MGB once that had reverse and 1st engaged simultaneously !....tried turning it over with the clutch depressed ?

glad you mentioned the gearbox. This happened after the car was parked in reverse, and then when i tried to start it it wouldnt turn. I will try and turn it over with the clutch engaged. Could be a gearbox thing, i'll check that out - thanks.

This happened after the car was parked in reverse

Just as an aside....not aimed at you!

Why park in gear? I'd imagine a little bump would cause a lot of damage to the internals. I always turn the wheels to the curb, living on a hill, but never leave it in gear.

always park in gear, always have done. Suppose it's just habit. I think incase handbrake fails, then will stop it rolling away.
