I had non starting when hot on my 986, which was the fuel pump relay, but this issue sounds more extensive unless the relay is causing a short for some reason and creating more issues. Another issue with hot starting can be the cable between battery and starter motor which is a known fault. If you are getting a very large battery drain on cranking, this could cause other electrical issues like CEL. Petrol smell is likely to be unburned petrol whilst turnign and not firing. HTH

Hi,anyone had experience of this ?
997tt turbo MY08.
Run for out for 15-20 mins so Engine up to temp .
Called at a friends house for about 20 mins .When restarting engine wouldn't start could smell fuel .
Noticed temp gauge not working red light at right end of scale flashing .
Then check engine Visit workshop came up .
left it for a few minutes retiried and it started .
Temp gauge still not working and message saying instrument failiure with water temp symbol.
Following morning took it to my local garage on the way temp gauge burst into life and so left it with them no faults .
One of the mechanics took it for a longer run and suffered same problem .
Plan is to change the water temp sensor.
I think its a lack of spark when hot .
Recent work done New centre radiator and new winscreen fitted at the same time .
Can anyone shed some light this problem
Thanks
