Starting up......rattles or not?

Hilux

New member
Hi

I`ve noticed that after a weeks lay up the car starts fine but there is a rattle for a second or so from the engine (top end IMO) before the oil pressure builds. The pressure after a second or so goes to just under 5 bar (when cold and idling)

I`ve no other issues with it (just under 3 bar when hot and idling) but wondered if anyone else experienced the same thing?

Cheers

Paul

Sometimes if its been left parked for a few weeks. Its the hydraulic tappets not having enough oil left in them and taking a moment or two to pump up.

The hydralic tappets on my Audi 500SE did that on start up and wasn't too worrying. However, when my 944 S started doing that, it was a siezed pulley on the timing belts which wore away and allowed the belt to jump. I will say no more.

Mine is the same, has had rattly start up after a couple of long lay up periods, pressures the same. Seems none the worse albeit a bit worrying first time I heard it which was about 20,000 miles ago.

My turbo is the same.

Good oil pressure, but often starts instantly without hearing the starter.

If you here the starter for about 2-3 seconds (like my Lux) then no rattle.

There is also what sounds like a little tappet rattle.....any suggestions.

Thanks for the advice........

It churns over about three times, starts, a second or so with a couple of rattles and then the oil pressure jumps straight up to just under 5 bar.

I`m surprised that the tappets bleed down over a week but if its not abnormal I wont do anything about it [&:]
