Steam coming from Engine - HELP

Guest

New member
Hi, i've had my 944 for about a month now and it is a great car....i love it.

But the other day whilst sitting in traffic I noticed some steam (possibly smoke) coming from the bonnet. I kept watching it and it stopped so i assumed it was the car in fronts exhaust. But i keep seeing this little puff of steam and it is certainly my car.

I opened the bonnet earlier and it seems to coming from the highlighted area in the photo. It is not constant just every now and again.

I don't really have a clue as to what it is....if anyone can help it will be much apprecited.

Thanks,

I'm also interested in joining you lot on some of your trips.....silverstone in June looks good.

Make sure you check the fuel lines (pipes going over the cam box), these have been know to fail and set the car on fire.

Could be oil leak from cam box dripping on to hot manifold.

I assume you're loosing water too ?

The water pipe pictured that runs parallel to the cam tower can corrode and leak, or the jubilee clips are loose or the rubber water hoses on each end may be leaking. The steam is caused by the water leaking straight down on to the hot exhaust manifold. Only takes a slight leak.

Run the engine and watch the exhaust manifold - you should be able to find the source of the leak easily enough. Not an expensive fix.

Thanks Mike.

I've just started her up and had a more detailed look at where it is coming from. It does (as you suggested) seem to be from leaking oil on the manifold....i suppose it must be from the cam box.

Thanks for your help.

Rick,

Thanks for your help....it doesn't actaully seem to be taht water pipe. The circled area in the pic shows some oil (i cleaned some of it off)...it looks liek the oil is dripping off onto the manifold....causing the smoke/steam.

Do you think this could be expensive or relatively cheap?

Cheers.
