Steering boss

I know this isn't the right place for this.

BUT I was given a momo steering wheel today and need a boss for it thought if ask on here if anyone wants to part with one before I go to ebay

It isn't a minefield, but it isn't straightforward either, Assuming that you want a boss for a series one car (early dash) then theyre similar to Mk1 Golfs and the other VAG cars used common parts.

Simply: if you buy a boss which has a fixed horn ring then theyre model specific (924 & series one 944 and oval dash/series two 944 onwards inc 968 and 964> 911). If the boss uses the horn ring from the original steering wheel then one boss fits all, but you MUST use the correct horn ring. early dash 944 et al use a 477 part number ring and oval dash 944 et al use a 928 part number prefixed ring.

VAG = Volkswagen AUDI Group. The switchgear and hub was shared with lots of seventies VAG cars.

Golf, Scriocco. Polo, AUDI 80, AUDI 100, Jetta, Derby, Passat, Santana etc.

The rule is: if the boss comes without its own horn ring then itll suit early or late 944s provided that you use the correct original part, but if the ring is built in then its either 924 & early dash 944 or oval dash 944 and 968.

The difference is in the horn ring which will short and possibly start a fire if you use the wrong part.

I doubt it but I cant say. The more you try to read the description the more contradictions you find.

Id guess that it was Mk3 Golf > and they don't suit 944s. Better to look for one which lists seventies Golfs and nothing else which contradicts that.

That one from the same vendor has fewer contradictions. The problem is that theyre usually 'foreign' vendors listing as many models as possible in order to attract buyers with little idea about the cars they are including.

Id be tempted to go for this one: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Steering-wheel-boss-kit-fit-VW-classic-beetle-dasher-Golf-GTI-mk1-Jetta-Karmann-/400592747418?pt=UK_CarsParts_Vehicles_CarParts_SM&fits=Model%3AGolf&hash=item5d45303b9a for a number of reasons.

For simplicity youre better off buying a genuine Momo boss from JCC or DT, because itll be listed properly, itll fit, itll collapse if you need it to and itll include the thin stamped horn mounting rings that you will need to use a push button horn.

The Momos are all model specific btw, so youll need a series one 944.924/Golf Mk1 listed part.

I'm also watching this one which actually says it's for a 44 and a few quid dearer.

If it has a built in horn ring then a 924 and a 944 Turbo (which is a series two car) cant both use the same boss.

If it requires that you fit the cars existing ring then itll be no different to the Golf Mk1 boss which is cheaper. This is the problem: you don't know if theyre ignorant, disinterested or dishonest.

Funny thing is. There both from the same seller both say they fit my car but there's a £5 difference between em.

Obviously I've gone the cheeper option

I don't know if it me being stupid but it fits the column horn finally works when wheel is not on. I put the wheel on no horn apart from when I turn the steering wheel and then it's constantly going

Am I doing something wrong
