Hi. Sorry for my ignorance but what's the benefit of this brace ? And can it be fitted to wide-body cars as well as narrow body?

I think all the WB cars will have them factory fitted because it is only required on the early cars if you want to run with 18" wheels, later NB cars don't need them. There are no "early" WB cars.

Looking at where it is fitted and how it is only attached at two positions, it is tough to work out what is "braces"

Before model year 1996 (T) only Coupe vehicles within the following vehicle identification
number ranges may be retrofitted with 18-inch wheels:
WP0 ZZZ 99 ZSS 31 2528 up to WP0 ZZZ 99 ZSS 31 7018 (rest of world) and
WP0 AA2 99 8SS 32 2696 up to WP0 ZZZ 99 8SS 32 4139 (USA and Canada).
A transverse strut, part No. 993.347.131.02 (left-hand drive) or 993.347.130.02 (right-hand
drive) must also be fitted between the steering gear fastening clamps, together with longer
hexagon socket head bolts.
Vehicles were produced within the named vehicle identification number ranges which were not
equipped with the body structure reinforcements necessary for 18-inch wheels. These vehicles
may not be retrofitted with 18-inch wheels. The vehicle identification numbers of these
vehicles are listed in the appendix on the last two pages.

There are equivalent lists for US / Canada cars, so please get in touch if you happen to have one specially imported ....

Please be diligent with this, it is obviously a significant issue despite the 'perceived wisdom' that has been adopted in the past.

Hope helps
