Hi guys ive had my Cab for a while now and after havinng to return it to the dealer to sort out a vibration and having new ARB's fitted and finally engine mounts it seemed to cure my problems I now have a clonk on the steering, not cv joint knock more steering rack , the previous mot mentioned a small amount of rmovement in the rack but the new mot didnt mention it not every so often i'll turn the wheel and feel a clonk , is it a live with or even worse is it someething that'll hit the wallet come mot time ? i have 2 months left on the warrentee do I run it back ?

The usual failing is with the CV joints on the steering shaft. They dry out , being so close to the exhaust manifold, then wear out, as theres no grease left in them...
It has a feeling of a "clonk"....

I had the same sensation with mine, couple with a slight binding sensation when applying full lock - one new steering shaft later and all is well again[:D]

The part is not too expensive, but a bit of a 'B' to fit..[8|]

Pedant moment ... there are no CV joints on the steering in a 944 (or 924/928/968/most 911's) - they are rear-wheel drive. A CV joint is the flexible drive joint on a driveshaft (CV = constant velocity, meaning constant input:eek:utput drive speeds, as opposed to hardy-spicer or spider joints used on cars of yore).

I suspect you are talking about the universal joints or ball joints, of which there are four in the steering mechanism. Two of them (inside ones) are part of the steering connection arms and the other two (outer ones) can be replaced independantly.

Not sure if this will cure your 'clonk' tho'. Get under the car and give everything a (good) wiggle and see if you can recreate the noise.

ETA: Don't forget that if you change these joints you need to get the tracking re-set, at least, and preferably get the whole car re-aligned. But they aren't too hard to change.

I recently had my steering shaft changed and now have a clonk, it seems to be an in out movement almost like the wheel is loose, not sure what that is. Old shaft didnt clonk but did have play in it and yes they are cross type joints - spider I think,

Chaps,

Sorry - ignore my last post. I was thinking you were all referring to the steering rack and the connection rods from there to the wheel hubs ... of course there are universal joints in the steering column ...

Apologies!

Oli.
