Steering Fluid - Top-up or leave alone?

The Steering fluid reservoir is on about 2/3rds full. Should I top it up or leave it alone? If top it up, I have no idea whether it has dot3 or dot4 in it and I don't know who last changed it (so I can't check). Should I buy dot4 and top it up - would this cause any problems if it currently has dot3??? Should it be like for like and therefore wait 'till next service and get it all replaced?
No more questions your honour.....

Cheers,
Chris.

Your power steering fluid reservoir should be topped up with power steering fluid, not brake fluid.

However, if the level has dropped, it sounds like you've got a leak.

Ahh, very good point, perhaps I've been totally stupid and assumed the brake fluid reservoir is the steering one! - thinking about it, it's the one attached to a big black cone-type-thing on the bulkhead, seems brake-like. The level has always been the same, was just wondering whether to top it up......

....to add further embarrassment, I read the dot3 / dot4 text off the reservoir last night but it didn't hit home that it was probably brakes!!!!![8|]

At least I've learned steering fluid it totally different to brake fluid - dare I ask where I look to check the steering fluid??

Back to sleep.......

Steering fluid is in the black bottle near the front of the engine on the driver's side. The fluid in there is red.

Your brake fluid reservoir is the one on the bulkhead. You should never ever need to top it up though. The level will drop slightly as the brake pads wear, but if you top it up you will find that it overflows when you fit new pads. If the level ever drops more than that it means that you've got a leak somewhere, which is an urgent trip to brake hospital job.
