Steering Free Play

The old 944 has developed some free play in the steering, manifesting itself in an audible 'clunk' when rapidly turning the wheel back and forwards. From a quick underbonnet inspection, it's not the top U/J.
Any ideas what sort of problem this most likley to be (I.E. Worn rack, steering ball end, rack mount etc.).
Obviously It'll be going to 'Doctor Porsche' ASAP, but just wondered if there was a common component failure that could cause this.

I think there was a similar question a few weeks ago if you search, but the common places are the shaft U/Js and the tie rod where they join the rack. The shaft with joints was £220, then dropped to £40, but I think it yo-yo'd back up again recently. Tie rods are about £60 each. A clonk suggest the joints more than the tie rods to me though. Lastly I guess the tie rod ends might wear, though I don't believe it's common.

Turns out that this was nothing more than a loose pinch-bolt...
Steering is now tranformed back to it's usual excellent standard.
I had this fixed, a new window motor fitted (I supplied the window motor myself), belts done and oil change all for under £300. Good old Tony at Wrightune, can't reccomend him to highly.
