Steering noise at slow speed

Hi. Went for a drive this morning and noticed that there was a creaking noise coming from the steering column when turning at slow speed. Disappears when I speed up and motion feels smooth at all times. The creak was barely noticeable before but seems to have gotten louder recently.

I plan to get this checked out, any ideas what this could be or has anyone come across it before? Car is a 2000 Boxster S.

Any feedback appreciated, many thanks.

The same noise on other Porsches (such as 944's) is usually the power steering pump.
On full lock (on a 944) it is acceptable (if embarrasing!), but if it happens otherwise it needs repairing.

Not sure if the same is true of Boxsters, anyone else had this?

Feroz

Are your sure it's not tennis elbow?

But seriously if it only happens at low speed just go a bit faster!

JCB..

(It's been a long week).....

I got a bit of a noise at slow speed on my old 944S2. It was not the power steering pump, it was definitely in the cabin and where the column meets the back of the wheel.

I just drove a lot faster with the stereo turned up to about 24. This effected a complete cure, even when parking.

Guess there must be some sort of bush which needs lubricating somewhere in there. (I wonder if that last sentence will be auto-moderated?)

Thanks for your responses. As tim says, sounds like cabin noise from a poorly lubricated part on the steering column (I hope so as I don't fancy replacing the pump). Car is booked in for a service so will get them to check it out.

Cheers

I started a thread about this a while ago called creaks and groans...i was told it was a worn bush[]

problem seemed to go away on its own but i've just come back from a short brake in Yorkshire and it started again on the way home[:(][:(]
