Steering Noise when cold

This is going to sound strange, so advice please.........

I have noticed on when the car is cold that there is a noise which I can't describe when taking a left turn, but it is only happening when the car is cold.

I found an empty car park yesterday and did some 360 degree turns, but the car had been driving for some miles by then and did very hard left and right hand turns, with no noise at all.

Mark,

This is too early in your ownership to start having problems!!!

Seriously though, I think I would check the power steering fluid level before anything else. Groaning noises from the rack are usually related to a lack of fluid. If the rack is leaking it's likely to drain from the parts that matter during an overnight stop and will take a few minutes for the pump to refresh it. It might be worth checking the garage floor up front for any telltale drips. The underside covers tend to stop the drips so you may have to look carefully. If there IS a leak the reservoir will be down a bit anyway.

I'm assuming for the moment that the noise IS a "groan" from up front. If it's something else do your best to describe the sound and location. Depending on the wheels you have there is a chance that it could be a contact with the chassis - although it doesn't make much sense that it would only occur when cold if that were the case.

That's my best guess so far. Otherwise a bit more information might be needed.

Dave

Dave,

Yes it is a groan from the front and there no signs of leaks on the garage floor.

I did see from the service receipts that a hose was changed during the service carried out in June of this year and the system was bled.

Will have a look tonight when I get home and will keep you posted.

Thanks

Dave,

Topped up the steering fluid so will see in the morning.

It needed 150ml to bring up to the min level mark.

I checked the service invoice which was carried out 600 miles ago, and it mentions replacement of pipe and bleed system.

Is it possible that it was not bleed properly ?, if not how do I bleed it ?

Thanks in advance.

Mark

Mark,

I don't believe there IS any mechaism to bleed the power steering. I think the only procedure is to turn the steering from lock to lock several times, making sure at all times that the fluid level doesn't dip below the "Min" mark. The fluid will find it's way into the system under pressure but if the fluid level gets too low (actually way below the "Min" level) there is a danger the pump will push air into the system defeating the object of the excercise.

Hope that helps.

Regards

Dave

If you still get the noise in the morning, it'll be either that you've got a leak in the system somewhere, and/or your power steering pump is wearing out.

Thanks for the help as no 'groaning' steering this morning, will keep an eye on the level though just in case there is a leak.........
