steering play urgent Q

hello

correcting what I thought was steering shaft play in the intermediate shaft between column and rack

(rattlling when going over bumps through steering, with hand on upper most uj of intermediate shaft I could feel play)

removed shaft and during removal, got the impression the shaft was actually quite new.

its now removed and I can't feel play in either of the joints.

inspecting further, I can feel a little play and the knocking/rattling noise through the steering column.

can someone advise if there is a bearing of some description at the bulkhead that is prone to wear and how difficult is it to replace if it all can be.

I'm pleased I don't have to fork out for a new shaft but would like to sort it out once and for all with so much of the repair/dismantle work completed.

any contacts I could ring?any diagrams I can reference?

oh dear, this is a much bigger job than I thought!

after searching net, I found these pages....

please tell me there is an easier way

I found that by undoing the top and bottom u/j pinch bolts I could slide the top on back far enough to allow the bottom one to come off quite easily - mine is not a powered rack and I dont know what difference that could make.
As for the steering column bush - there is a plastic sleeve above it and I found making a thin (.75mm ish) washer to fit on top of it, I cured the rattle.

As per the linked page you included - he should have had a look at excellence magazine which covered replacement of the ignition switch a couple of issues back (oops - #182 - May 2010).

Yes the shear bolts are a pain but EVERYONE does it - prevents casual theft as the ignition and steering lock can't be easily removed. The trick is to drill a hole in the center and use a bolt extractor to wind out the bolts. New shear bolts are used for assembly - the heads "shear" off when the bolts are tight enough.

A pain - yes - but probably better than cutting up your dash board - even if it is covered.
