Steering Play

Hi, I have a bit of play (left and right) and decided to look under the car. The play is not coming from where the steering shaft connects to the steering rack but rather the rack itself. Does this mean i need to buy a new rack or are there rebuild parts for it? (i.e. is it easy to replace the gear inside the rack?)

I only know this cause mine is the same. I've changed the copper washer but its weeping from the body of the sensor so I'm going to have to buy a new one soon.Sorry I can't help with the steering question but my advise would be to replace the rack with a good rebuilt one or a known good secondhand one.

Was it that my responce was much shorter than normal that made it seem curt? I hope not.. Not my intention.. I had just finished another essay of a forum post and thought I should practice short and sweet. I thought my answer was a bit obvious, but it might not be to someone who might expect there to be a servicable part in there... But as a rule, the Porsche racks are not very servicable without some specialist kit, especially as some of the internal spaces have highly polished surfaces and tight tolerances which need to stay that way, so my rule is "If its between the track rods and the steering shaft, other than a bad crush washer or hose, get it to a proper ZF remanufacturer" I really don't know why people would buy the seal kits you can buy for the rack, as they tend to fail because of pitting and a new seal kit will only buy you some time. The same is true of people buying the power steering pump seal kits.. It might buy you some time, but there is such a difference to having a proper remanufacturerd pump where the pressure valve has been re set, the shaft is a new polished one and all the vanes inside are replaced.. No wonder so many people say the 944 has heavy power steering! :) I can't always be around though.. I don't know how BatMan does it.. :)

Nothing at all wrong with your response Jon. I'm just jealous that you picked that one to answer. [:D][:D]

Hi Jon, thanks a lot for the reply. I am now looking to buy a rack from a fairly newer car or get a reconditioned one with warranty. This gives me a good opportunity to drop the transmember and put in new engine mounts too. :)

there is a guy on ebay selling new racks for £300 if your in the midlands and you can collect then your welcome to my old rack .....I only changed it because it was dirty[:D]

IMO there are reconditioned steering racks and there are reconditioned racks. On an old modern I found this to be the case (the new rack lasted 14 months before it became notchy) and in the Stag world it is a known issue (a rack I acquired secondhand which leaked more than the Exxon Valdez was actually tighter than the one I fitted; Speaking to others it is a bit of a lottery as to how good a steering rack you get). I'd be tempted to go used or a ZF recon item in your shoes.

Recon racks seem to be £200 to £250 ....I brought a brand new ZF rack from the UK agents for £300 delivered

I am very interested in taking it from you indeed (from a 91 car too it seems) :) I just happen to be in the midlands too!

Ah, fair enough, I thought that may have been for a reconditioned rack via a certain reconditioning place within the Midlands. Stag steering racks are not that much cheaper new (around £140-200) and after often iffy :(.
