Porsche recommends upgrading the castor mounts to the 968 version if fitting wheels larget than 16", do that & get any other worn bushes replaced & it should transform the car. Cheaper method would be togo back to standard & get a better ride quality too [;)]

I have an 86 944, with 17" 911 wheels on it, and i ged very bas feedback when going over any bumps, the steering shakes badly, the bigger the bump, the more it shakes. is this because of the wheels? its there a solution, som sort of steering stabaliser? anybody else experience the same?

What Riverside said, just to add that the cars are very sensitive to tyre pressures and geometery. A proper 4-wheel alignment by an experienced expert can transform the car, and would be a good idea after fitting the 968 castor mounts.

+1 .............You ought to check your track rod ends too. Jack one front wheel and holding it 3am and 9pm give the wheel a good hard wiggle . Any clonks or knocks would indicate that your trackrod ends are shot or your steering rack ball joint/s are shot or possibly the steering rack needs adjustment . If they are all ok I would check your front tracking next . Are you getting bump-steer at all when going over big bumps ?
 
Hi, the steering all checks out ok, it just seems to be the bigger wheels acting as a bigger lever to force feedback up to the steering wheel. What is the difference in the 968 caster mounts? also i would be interested in a break upgrade to the four pots like on a 968, are there any other models which would have somthing that would bold straight on to my car? thanks guys
 
The castor mounts connect the back of the lower wishbone to the chassis. It's a doughnut of rubber mounted in a metal shell. The 968 version has less rubber & more metal so less deflection under load.
 
A lot of it is probably due to low profile tyres, much less side wall flex so the road can get more leverage on the steering rack. I believe the P/O fitted my car, also on 17" rims, with adjustable camber plates to help with this issue.
