steering pull, over an hr at garage, still pulls

Hey guys, would much appreciate some advise.
Took my 944s to have the steering aligned this aft as it slightly pulls to the left,
The guy took three attempts to sort it and actually came out for a few runs to see what was happening, anyway he eventually put the steering wheel straight again but it still pulls to the left and suggested there something wrong to the rear.

Its had new wishbones and nothing bent to the front.

Nothing cropped up in mot 4 months back but at the time i did start to hear a knocking to right rear, increased recurrance with rd speed, this stopped and i didnt here this noise for the last month until today!! after it had been jacked up. Is this related?
Suggestions please.......
its not the time of yr to be rolling around the street with a torch strapped to my head for too long !!!
Many thanks JB

It sounds like this was a fairly standard tracking alignment you had today and not a full four wheel alignment. The 944 has adjustable everything front and rear, which really should be checked/adjusted every few years as who knows how far it may have been knocked out of alignment by our wonderful road surfaces. You could spend time getting the front tracking spot on but if one of the rear wheels is pointing a few degrees out of alignment the car will never pull straight.

The knocking noise sounds like you have a worn CV joint. Sometimes just jacking the car up and down will temporarily cure as it repositions the grease. Unfortunately you seem to have the other end of the bargain, jacking it up has caused it to resurface again. You have two CV joints on each side of the rear axle shafts and they are around £50 each from Bert at www.berlyn-services.co.uk

Thanks paul appreciate it,
His quoted four wheel tracking means using his lasers to compare front to back then, he didnt touch the rear, find it odd he didnt even think to adjust the rears, so im £35 down for nothing!!
Ah well, guess i should hunt down a decent garage in the preston area, anyone know any??!!
Will get on to cv joints asap, cheers!!

35 pounds was probably just a basic tracking job to set up toe angles on the front wheels.

On the 944, you can adjust toe, camber and caster on both front wheels, on the rear wheels you can adjust camber and toe. This to be done properly usually costs about 150 pounds.

From your description, it sounds like you caster angles on your front suspension is out, or you have soft bushes somewhere on the suspension which when driving are allowing the suspension geometry to change.

Lastly, if you have a 4 wheel alignment on a 944, make sure they set it up for UK roads, if you usually use the car here... if they set it up neutral (no camber thrust) or for left hand roads (left bias camber thrust angle) then it will pull left.

You should get the alignment done properly - as described by folks above me.

Bear in mind you may not feel the full effects until you put a fresh set of boots on.

I had an arguement about this with my alignement chap, I wanted it set up with the same settings both sides, I drive on both sides of the road and on racetracks. He said it would be horrible on normal roads, I think ordinarily they set the camber differently usually to allow for the camber on the road toward the gutter. I am quite happy with it set symetrically, if the road has a high crown it pulls to the left a bit, but then this is the steering letting me know the road slopes left, overtaking it slopes the other way ;)

It looks like your chap who charged £35 did the basic check (at that price) and I wonder how competent he was to carry out a full check maybe??[8|]

Try Chris Sanderson at Loe Bank Motors (Edensfield near Ramsbottom).

Probably the best person for the job is Chris Franklin at Center Gravity. He is mobile and does laser alignment etc using a very sophisticated trailer setup. You may have seen it at Eynsham Hall last year or there has been a couple of pictures of it in Porsche Post.

Cheers,

Cheers guys, much appreciated, any of the lancs folk seen what looked like an old porsche specialist place in coppul? Randomly came across it one day when i didnt own a porker and there was a bunch of old lefty 911's outside. The old wooden part of it had porsche script painted on which you could only just make out as it was that old, just wandered if it was worth a trip out there.
Thanks all
JB

Contact David Baker (RO for Lancs & Cumbria). I think the chap there was named either Keith or Kevin but it is a long time ago when I saw him).
A good contact for you is Phil Clark in Hindley near Wigan. Email me off forum and I'll give you his address and contact number if you want them).

Cheers,
