Steering rack leak

Any body know why my Steering rack leaks, coz its doing my head in, this is the third rack i've had on it and its fine when its used after fitting it, but after a few months, or if i dont drive it, its off again leaking. The Forte rep came in to see me in my garage with this months technical sheet, and what was on there but the 944 rack problem, suggesting i put in there additive, so the rep give me one for free and said try it out and let me know how it goes, well guess what rep, it made the leak leak more!

I had a spate of them about 5 years ago; I think I replaced 3 on 2 cars within months. It's nothing sinister though, just the seals leaking.[FONT=verdana, geneva"] [FONT=verdana, geneva"]If you're using second hand replacements you're being unlucky and if they are recon maybe they are not being done quite right for some reason?[FONT=verdana, geneva"]

Tell me about it! It's something I've to get done on my car too. First it was the power steering pump and now the rack, luckily I've got a good used replacement ( thanks andy[;)]).

On the subject, 944online sell a rebuild kit for the racks for around $90. anybody on here used the kit and how sucessful was the rebuild?

John Daly.

I was gonna get a seal kit, but for the price went for a 2nd hand replacment, and it was great for about 5 months, then i started using my van a bit more and only got the 44 out at weekends, this is when it started, i think its because of lack of use? maybe the seals dry up, this did the same the first time. what i did have to do was change the inner tie bars as they was longer on the new rack, i found out when doing the wheel alignment.

You are best of removing the original rack and sending it away for reconditioning.
Western Power Steering in Bristol did my 993 Rack in 2 days and it is fine.
