steering rack play

Had a advisory on my MOT saying "play on both sides of steering rack"? Had my trusted garage check it out for me and they confirmed that there is some play on the steering rack both sides. The issue is that although the steering feels fine at the moment is there suppose to be any movement in the steering rack? Has anyone had similar issues? Does this mean i need a new steering rack?Hope not as this would be very expensive. Any info on if the steering rack should have any play or people with similar experiences would be helpfull.

Cheers

When I bought my Cayman it was subjected to the 110 point check at the Porsche centre (as I was taking out the warranty). It was 3 years old but had only covered 9K miles. One of the track rod ends had a bit of play in it and they recorded it on the log sheet but said that it didn`t need to be changed yet. When it went in for MOT this year (15K miles and 4 yrs old) there was still a bit of play but the inspector said that he had seen this before and wasn`t overly concerned. I can`t detect anything while driving it but it is a concern that after such a low mileage there is enough wear to detect this play. There was nothing wrong with the rack.

Hi Bruntj, You dont mention how old your cayman is, or if under warranty...if the later, although track rod ends woud be considered as wear & tear, and not particularly expensive to replace, the rack however, should be covered. I havent come across any other concerns previously with regard to the rack...but if you visit the Boxster forum and search there...then you may find further information. (Boxster & Cayman steering set up either same or simular) Cheers

Its not uncommmon to find the inner or outer steering ball joint has play at mileages under 40 k . If the car spends a lot of time on full lock parking etc then the wheels "hop" due to the toe and camber angles.
