Steering Sensor Recalibration

Have just had front tyres renewed (Pirellis). Tyre Fitter had latest laser tracking alignment rig and a check was free so had the car checked. I knew there was some problem as the front O/S tyre was wearing on the inside edge. The alignment check showed that the front O/S wheel camber was slightly out of tolerance as was the tracking on both fronts. Problem - If I have the tracking adjusted (which I need to) the tyre place does not have a PS2 to recalibrate the steering sensor. As I live in the depths of Cornwall the nearest OPC at Exeter is some distance away.

How much of an issue is the steering sensor within the PSM. The car is only used for road driving and not tracked. Will it make that much difference to everyday use?

Richard - many thanks. However your unequivocal answer is contrary to that in Adrian Streather's book - 996 Essential Companion - Page 303 - viz - 'WARNING - The Steering Angle Sensor must be re-calibrated if the previous wheel alignment values for any 996 model fitted with PSM have ben changed'. Mine is a MY03 PSM fitted C2 Tip Coupe and I know that the O/S front castor angle needs some adjustment as does the front tracking on both sides - albeit all very minor adjustments. Mighht it be that for very small adjustments then your statement still holds good which will save me a lengthy trip up to Exeter when I can get the alignment done locally?
 
It does say that in the manual, but I don't know anyone who does it. Have a word with one of the suspension gurus like Center Gravity.
 
Richard - done as you suggested and they were very helpful. Upshot is that their considered opinion is that the sensor would need re-calibrating if some of the steering gear had been replaced, however for slight geometry adjustments it was not so essential. So I will have the camber/tracking work done and the recalibration can be checked when it next goes for service to either the OPC or an Indy. Many thanks

 
Just to add to this,Was about to have new tyres fitted and geo done,Anyway o/s rear camber bolt had rounded itself so geo couldn't be done so they put it back as best they could
so I could drive to opc Exeter to pick up new bolts and washers,one of there staff did explain that after every geo the system should be re-calibrated otherwise psm and abs failures could occur.
On my way back to protyre PSM and ABS failures did occur.
I think small adjustments is OK as I have mine done every 3-4 months, because our roads are so bad
Basically do have it re-calibrated every so often
