Steering Shaft refittment

Whilst in the process of changing the engine mounts on the Turbo, I removed the steering shaft and I'm attempting to refit it and REALLY struggling to get it lined up. Is this a job anyone else has tackled or had experience with ?

I assume you mean the short shaft with the two u/j's at either end? If so you do need to unbolt your steering rack to allow you to shimmy it around to allow you to replace the shaft. Note I mean just loosen off the rack, you don't have to remove it.

Hi Chris,

As Scott said you need to loosen the steering rack off so you can get enough room to pop the UJ over the spindle. Also the spindles on the rack and upper steering column have a flat on one edge which needs to be lined up with the flat in the UJ, IIRC. Also make sure you use new pinch bolts when you refit it as I reused the old ones on mine and they came loose pretty quick, thats why there are flats on the spindles in case the pinch bolt fails you don't loose the steering

Well best of luck, make sure its all nice and tight afterwards.

Thanks for the advice chaps. My next step (when I get the time) is to loosen off the rack as suggested. My concern is that in the process of lower the cross member, at one stage I didn't undo the steering shaft ( with 2 x UJ's) as it didn't mention it in the Clarks instructions.

As a result I'm worried I might have upset the alignment/ bent the steering rack ? I'll try undoing the rack from the cross member and see how I get on with a fresh approach.

Thanks to all for the advice and suggestions - all fitted and back in one piece. My advice for what its worth - don't bother changing the engines mounts unless you REALLY have to....
