Steering shaft replacement.??

Hi Folks
Has any of you chaps ever replaced the steering shaft on there steed.????

I need to do my S2 as its failed its MOT on the worn UJ,s..[:mad:]
Actually i knew it needed doing , i was just hoping it would get through the test....
Ive got the part ,, it just needs fitting....

So any help + usefull info would be greatly apreciated....[;)][;)]

It doesnt look to be a dificult job ,,, but one never knows.......
 
This may help. In order to replace the head gasket on my 924 turbo it was necessary to disconnect the lower end of the steering shaft to remove the banjo bolts for the oil cooler pipes which block access to the lower turbo flange bolt. Put the car on axle stands or ramps and set the wheels straight ahead. Mark the position of the rack on the crossmember and where the slot in the lower joint is relative to the rack, by what ever method you prefer. Remove the pinch bolts (not just loosen, they sit in a groove in the shaft for safety) from both ends of the shaft. Mark the position of the slot at the top too. Loosen all four of the rack bolts, and completely remove three of them and swing the rack away from the lower knuckle. Of course on the S2 there are other appendages, like the power steering pipes getting in the way which may need to removed first to get access, but in principle this is the job in a nutshell. From here it is straightforward. Remove the old shaft and fit the new one, lining up the marks for the slots. Use new locking nuts for the pinch bolts. Align the rack with the marks you made when you tighten everything back up. With any luck the steering wheel should be level. Connect the power steering pipes if they were disconnected. Go for a test drive. You may need to alter the postion of the rack slightly if the steering wheel it at the wrong angle. Take the car in for four wheel alingment before driving any great distance if you are in anyway unhappy about the accuracy of your re-alignment of the parts.
 
I actually had my steering shaft replaced about a few months ago because the joints had worn, I just didn't get round to posting it on here![8D]

At my last service last year it was noted that there was play in the shaft, and the OPC quoted over £200+VAT just for the shaft. Porscheshop were quoting £128+VAT (+£50 exchange) for a refurbished one so I thought it was about right, but was just going to wait until I could afford it.

Not long ago I was looking on the euro car parts website and they were quoting £50+VAT for a genuine Porsche one which I thought was a lot better. I got back to the OPC just to see if prices had changed, and it was now £39+VAT!!! I ordered one straight away, and they only charged about £60 (just over an hour) to fit it. I thought about fitting it, but chickened out, and I wanted a 4 wheel alignment anyway so just got them to fit it. All in for under £100 I was happy and glad I didn't order one a while back at more than twice that.

Hope you didn't pay more than that for your shaft Dave[;)]
