where is the cheapest place to buy the intermediate steering shaft between rack and column?

searched on tinternet and 115 inc vat

seems bloody expensive for a piece of steel rod with UJ on it

Why are you replacing it?
I thought mine had slightly worn U/J's but after talking to Kev at EMC he said they're pretty much all like that.

I bought mine direct from Porsche IIRC, wasn't that much, certainly under £100 for it.

I replaced mine a couple of years ago as I had a slight knock noise that I could feel through the steering.
Had no problems since[:)]

lots of play and MOT is soon.

I have reservations about second hand items if paying to have it exchanged, would want it to last longer than a year and you just don't get any gurantee with older items

wondering if a uj can be retrofitted to it. they are certainly cheap enough as replacement item.

just a thought

Bought one for about £50 from german & sweedish for my Lux, paid about an hour's labour to have it fitted.

I year later, bought one from Porsche and paid another hour's labour to fit it. []

Was perfectly fine when I sold the car years later.

Porsche seemed to do a temporary knock down price at some stage. I replaced the one on my car - second hand ones were around £50 at the time but Porsche were selling them for £65. I got a brand new one and not long after reports on this forum were that the price jumped up again to around £120. You see this on various parts as old production batches are consumed and new ones have to be manufactured which bumps up the price. Typical case in point is that big red calipers are far more expensive than big black ones even though they are essentially the same thing. Big blacks can still be had from the original manufacturing batch, whereas big reds have had to be remanufactured and hence are more than double the cost.

I agree with comments that it is probably a false economy to buy a second hand steering shaft - you don't know how much useful life they have remaining.

Classic symptom of this is that you get what feels like out-of-balance wheel wobble during the first 10 to 15 mins of driving which reduces as the heat from the exhaust warms the shaft and expands it to take up the play in the U/J's.
