Steering Shake (at speed)?

Help please.

My C2S has developed a shake/shudder which feedsback through the steering wheel - so presumably is something to do with the front wheels or steering. I am running on 17" wheels. The symptoms only manifest themslves at high speed (100mph+) but gets worse on braking. This is not noticable (yet) at normal road speeds.

Geometry was checked and adjusted within the last month.

Could this be: wheel balancing? worn ball joint?

The geometry/alignment was checked/adjusted within the last month using recent kit and reputable servicer so I hope it is not this!

Specifically, the vibration appears about 120mph and seems to be coming through the steering but is no different on left or right hand turns. It gets worse on braking but disappears virtually without trace as the speed drops sub-100mph.

Car has only done 32k miles and has had no track use before my trip to Le Mans.

Can't really think of anything else to add really!

Can you explain "runout on the rotors" please (sorry)?

All ideas welcome. It sounds as though the starting point is balancing though.

options...

what tyres are you running ?

at only 32k (only 32k what you been doing driving backwards [:D] ) could be worth getting the suspension checked out...?

as for "runout on the rotors" check this out...

i.e. vibration from discs due to uneven surface from IIRC the dics not being mounted correctly as seen on the lip of dics.... although maybe maurice can explain this better.. I know what it is (I think!) but may not as good as putting it into words !

It still sounds to me as though balance is the place to start with step 2 being the discs.

Under normal road conditions and speeds there is no discernable vibration or shake - indeed everything is ok up to 100 or even 110 but kicks in as you approach 120.

One thought. As I am running 17" wheels on a wide-body there are spacers fitted (at least on the rear - I need to check the front!). Can these contribute to an out-of-balance situation?

Finally in your view is it better to have the wheels balanced on or off the car - and again would the use of spacers influence this decision in any way?
