Steering UJ play

I have a low speed knock that I can feel through the steering wheel, but only in two places. There is also some vagueness in the steering nothing major, but it's there at speed.

Today why looking for a small oil leak I noticed how close the steering shaft is to the exhaust (I'd guess at around 5mm so probably a good chance the engine mounts need replacing),but while I was there I thought I would check for play in the steering uj.I could move the lower part of the uj left to right, not rotational but play across the pin. I'm guessing this isn't normal? Would also tie up with the clonks in two places.

I haven't checked rotational play as I didn't have an assistant to hand to work the steering wheel!!

I had the same - changed it for a JMG "special" steering shaft but haven't sent the old one back yet. My garage thought the JMG part was excellent.

Normal - but not right!

Get it changed, but be careful getting the right one as there are at least 3 different lengths!

Thanks for the replies :)

I did think that this type of joint may have always had a small amount of play laterally across the pins, without causing much in the way of rotational play - but this one does have a reasonable amount of movement across one direction of the UJ, but not the other part - so I'm pretty sure it is this that is causing the low speed clunk.

As I say, I can only feel it in two places across one steering wheel rotation, which would add up with the UJ moving from side to side. I'll check the rotational play later, but tbh, they are cheap enough from JMG that I'll be replacing it anyway.

Do I need to move the rack forward to get it out and off the splines?

My mechanic noted a similar problem with the universal joint on my 944 steering. Popped into euro car parts today they didn't have a picture of the part but are going to order in a steering column lower joint (hopefully the correct part) its priced at £96 are there any cheaper options, is the part common to any old vw or audi?
thanks

Buy the whole shaft from jmg. Not much more expensive and you get £25 back if you return your old one

If the rack and double UJ shaft are not assembled correctly, the UJ will load up at two points per revolution.

Lift the front wheels, Slacken off the lower bolt, rotate the steering and gradually tighten the UJ clamp bolt.

That worked for me on two cars.

Its to do with the angle[:D]

good luck
George

Wider internet research suggests there are no cheap options for this part so got euro car parts down to £70, and least it replaces both uj's even though its only the bottom one that seams to be worn. Will it be easy to get the old one off?

most garages wont bother, they clean the old one up in situ, realign it, and charge for new.....[:D]

(they will have thrown out the old one guv, skip emptied an hour ago)

to remove will require loosening the rack from memory

Just got this fitted. Wow what a difference the old one only had about 1mm play on both joints but with a new one fitted the car drives so much better. steering much sharper and more exact feeling. Just need to reset steering wheel to stright now.
