Steering wheel boss stuck on column

I should probably leave all the work in the capable hands of the boys at EMC, and stop attempting to fit stuff myself.

I thought it'd be fun to try and fit the OMP Superquadro steering wheel to my S2 tonight - how wrong was I! It was not fun at all...I manged to remove the old steering wheel with no problems (24mm bolt then just pull), but when I tried to fit the aftermarket boss to the steering column, I got the alignment wrong!

When I tried to remove the boss kit to re-seat it, it's completely stuck on the steering column - I seem to remember there's some sort of slide hammer made specifically for pulling off steering wheels...if anyone knows what they look like or where to get one for the 944, I'd appreciate a link or two!

I'll give the boys at EMC a buzz tomorrow, no doubt they'll laugh at my lack of talent with even a ratchet and socket! [&:]
 
Soft headed mallet hitting around the boss should release it.

When you say mis-aligned what do you mean? Splined shaft so not sure how it could be misaligned? [&:]
 
I was being anal - I wanted to have the "top" arrow at the top of the hub...but then when i went to tighten the nut, I forgot about the small amount of play that engages the steering lock when the ignition is off!

I shall try and find a soft headed mallet tomorrow! [:)] In any case, I'd like to have the boss off anyway as I want to add a spacer in (I have short arms)!

EDIT: I definitely need to move the steering wheel closer! Also the indicators don't automatically cancel any more...so I've screwed up something else!!
 

Not really on topic but would like to add that you are not alone, I too am extremely capable of messing up even the simplest of tasks, I managed to completely drain my battery and blow half the fuses in the fuse box simply changing the radio [&o]

The non-cancelling of the indicators can be down to a number of things, but making sure that the tab on the back of the steering wheel (on the boss if it's aftermarket) is as it should be is a major part of it.

Cheap bosses (EKTOR comes to mind as I tried to fit one to my S2) don't have a proper tab on the back, and hence won't self-cancel the indicators. (They are also hideously badly made and mine was returned pronto for a refund - which in itself caused an argument, but that's another story.)

If you get really unstick with getting the boss off then you could improvise a puller with a sturdy bar of something and a couple of nuts and bolts, but that's getting pretty heavy with it ...

Oli, it was a Ektor kit...chucked in for free. Now I know why! Once it's off, my version of that piece of crap is going straight back for a refund. The disintegrating box it came in should've been my clue, in hind sight!
 
Ahhhh ..... the EKTOR kit I bought was so astonishingly badly made I was shocked they could market such a thing.

It worked as badly as it was made as well. Indicators didn't self-cancel, and the horn didn't work at some rotational angles, and came on spontaneously at others!

It was sent back, and they ended up refunding the cost of the item, the cost of the postage to me and the cost of the return postage. Utter cr4p.

(It wasn't from some shop on the south coast was it? Bournemouth, perhaps?)

Would fitting the wheel to the boss make it easier to remove?
Careful it doesn't take your face out when it comes free leave the nut on if there is space.

A number of bosses dont incorporate a lug to operate the self cancelling indicator feature. They usually expect you to remove the part, which incorporates the horn contacts and trailing wire, from your original wheel/hub and fit it to the replacement boss.

I tried to keep the wheel in place and pull the whole lot off...still no luck - I need to find a rubber mallet and whack the boss a few times over the weekend! I've been told to leave the nut loosely in place by several people I spoke to, to avoid getting a very painful imprint of "OMP" backwards on my face!

This boss kit came with the horn contact wire dangling off it (which came off as though it was never fixed to the back, but that's another story), so I thought I wouldn't need to take the back off the original wheel assembly! I was hoping to be able to sell the entire steering wheel for a decent amount of money as it is mint.
